Jewish Community Relations Council
The JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) is the central public affairs coordinating and advisory body for the organized Jewish Federation of Lane County. The JCRC is charged with the responsibility to:
- Promote mutual understanding among all groups in the community and further, through education and otherwise, general public acceptance and practice of the principles promoting human dignity, individual rights, and fraternal relationships across religious, racial and ethnic lines and groups.
- Develop an intelligent and effective public opinion within and outside the Jewish community on Jewish community relations problems, concerns and commitments.
- Safeguard, protect and defend the civil, economic, religious and social rights of the Jewish people
- Function as a coordinating and advi9sory body for the development and implementation of coordinated programs and policies for, and participation in, local Jewish organizations in the field of community relations in Lane County, Oregon.
The efforts of the JCRC reflect the profound Jewish commitment to tikkun olam, the repair of the world. Tikkun olam expresses the conviction of the organized Jewish community that it must be active in the effort to build a just society.
The JCRC operates on the basis of the following principles in regard to the State of Israel:
- We affirm our unwavering support for the State of Israel’s inalienable right to exist as a democratic, Jewish state within secure and recognized borders.
- While acknowledging the need for open discussion, we expect and demand that individual journalists and media outlets maintain an informed, balanced and unbiased approach in reporting on the subjects of Israel, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Peace process.
- We do not automatically equate criticism of Israel or its policies with anti-Semitism. Nevertheless, the persistence of anti-Semitism around the world, particularly in the Islamic world, is an undeniable fact and should be identified for what it is and uncompromisingly opposed.
- We believe that a just and lasting peace between Arabs and Israelis (and in particular the Palestinian-Israeli) is indispensable to the spread of democratic and humane values throughout the region, and to its future prosperity and happiness. To this end, we support all efforts to achieve a compromise solution, negotiated and agreed to by the parties involved, that will grant all sides recognition of their rights to self-determination.
